This rare harp was built in Paris at the atelier Cousineau, whose name is engraved in the brass on the neck; marked just below is the number D272. Notable from a technical standpoint is the mechanism à chevilles tournants, that produces the semitone alteration of the note by directly turning the peg which holds the string. Structurally, the soundbox has seven staves; the sound holes in the central stave are closed by the soupapes, engaged by the eighth pedal of rÈforcement. The central stave is also peculiar in being removable, and is held in place by a long pin. Besides the rÈnforcement pedal, this harp features a ninth pedal, called Ètouffoir or damper, that operates inside the soundbox to produce an effect similar to a mute. |
