This example of a Welsh triple harp has 107 strings in three parallel rows; the two outer rows are tuned to the diatonic scale, the inner row is made up of the chromatic notes. Since the strings alternate with regularity (one chromatic string between every two diatonic ones) this harp provides for seven chromatic notes per octave, thus enabling the tuning of major and minor semitones, as was commonly done in non-equal temperaments. The Welsh harp (like the ancient Irish harp) was held against the left shoulder and was generally tuned in G major. |
