Diatonic harp
Philippines, island of Cebu?, mid 20th c.

Total height 144 cm
Maximum width 65.1 cm
Weight 12.3 kg
Material wood, wire
Nr. of strings 26 (32 pegs)
Longest string 128.3 cm
Tuning diatonic (presumable range B2-F6)

This very rare harp is a masterpiece of primitive instrument making: the neck, sculpted and traditionally carved in the form of a stylized horse head, is made from a single piece of solid wood, while the soundbox is constructed of five staves literally stitched together with iron thread. The soundboard is composed of fourteen layers of wood held together with wooden nails; the three sound holes are cut into the central stave of the soundbox. Worthy of note is the large discrepancy between the number of pegs (all wooden) located in the neck and the string holes in the soundboard.
