Probably of British origin, this harp is characterized by the peculiar shape of the column; since nothing on the neck suggests the presence of any kind of mechanism for producing accidentals, we can assume a diatonic tuning. Of note are two holes in the neck, probably used for a supporting strap, just under the little metal crown that caps the soundbox. This harp was found strung with some metal strings, but the structure would not appear to support that kind of stringing. The decoration is reminiscent of the small non-pedal harps made in the British Isles around the middle of the nineteenth century; particularly interesting are the two classical figurines painted at the base of the soundboard, probably depicting Apollo with his lyre and one of the three Parcae holding the thread of destiny, very similar to the decorations found on large pedal harps of the first half of the nineteenth century. |
